Together in the Art Museum Looking at the Song of the Lark

She whispers
We see people like we view paintings.

Look at them quickly
a three second glance
and pretty much get the gist of what's going on.

Usually we walk on to the next exhibit and get a coffee.

Sometimes
though
the image calls
and we are pulled in to explore each brush stroke's texture
to study the balance or lack thereof
to consider the colors
and to inevitably understand and fall in love.

When we meet people
it is the same.

Usually we take in the black wool coat
the septum ring
and hurry on.

Yet every now and again it happens
we must look look look
and so become enamored.

Yes
I say
regarding her blue eyes.

But in the end
it's still just paint on canvas
and what we saw originally:

a picture of a woman
standing in a field
under the big open sky.
